What Women Need To Know About Chronic Diarrhea

  • Autoimmune-associated diseases that cause chronic diarrhea like celiac disease, microscopic colitis and Crohn’s are more common in women.[1]
  • Hormone and other conditions can lead to chronic diarrhea from bile acid malabsorption (BAM), often undiagnosed cause of chronic diarrhea in women.[2]
  • Women, you deserve diarrhea relief!
  • Gut microbial dysbiosis with loss of key bacteria (e.g., Akkermansia municiphila) can cause diarrhea in women.[3]
  • Diarrhea is a common side effect of medications—and women experience more medication side effects because most Rx studies are done on men.[4]
  • Food intolerances from enzyme deficiencies are common in women and can lead to diarrhea.[5]

Acute episodes of diarrhea, especially with bleeding, could be from a life-threatening disorder. If you are experiencing acute diarrhea with bleeding, seek care through the emergency department.

Overview

Chronic diarrhea is a persistent change in stool consistency, characterized by loose stools and increased frequency of more than three stools per day for at least four weeks. For women, chronic diarrhea is often linked to autoimmune disease, gut inflammation, bile acid malabsorption (BAM), and hormonal changes, making treatment a complex but necessary endeavor.

Traditional Gastroenterology Approaches to Chronic Diarrhea

Gastroenterologists typically diagnose chronic diarrhea by categorizing it into different types:

  • Watery diarrhea – secretory vs. osmotic
  • Fatty diarrhea – due to malabsorption
  • Inflammatory diarrhea – often linked to conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) or infections

Despite extensive testing, many cases of chronic diarrhea in women remain without a clear cause. External factors such as stress, hormonal fluctuations, and past medical exposures can all play a role. This highlights the importance of a patient-centered approach that considers diet, lifestyle, and mind-body therapies as potential interventions.

The Role of Autoimmune Diseases in Chronic Diarrhea

Approximately 80% of individuals diagnosed with autoimmune diseases are women.[8]Many autoimmune conditions, like celiac disease and inflammatory bowel disease, can impact gut health, leading to diarrhea. Celiac disease, an autoimmune disease and inflammatory bowel diseases, including Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, and microscopic colitis, are more prevalent in women and can cause diarrhea. Despite traditional therapies many women continue to have symptoms and are never offered effective complementary treatments. For example, many women with chronic diarrhea may benefit from innovative therapies such as low-dose naltrexone (LDN), which has novel and paradoxical effects in autoimmune conditions. Yet, this treatment option is often overlooked in conventional practice.

Bile Acid Malabsorption: A Common but Underdiagnosed Cause

Bile acid malabsorption (BAM) is a significant but frequently undiagnosed cause of chronic diarrhea in women. Bile acids, produced by the liver and stored in the gallbladder, aid in fat digestion. When the regulation of bile acids is disrupted—due to gallbladder removal, medication use, or intestinal injury—excess bile acids accumulate in the colon, leading to diarrhea.

This condition is particularly relevant in women who have undergone cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal) or who suffer from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), celiac disease, or Crohn’s disease. Studies suggest that altered bile acid metabolism in IBS can contribute to symptoms, making bile acid binders a potential therapeutic option.

Holistic and Medical Solutions for Chronic Diarrhea in Women

For many women, chronic diarrhea management requires a multifaceted approach, including:

  • Dietary modifications – Identifying food triggers and incorporating gut-friendly foods
  • Mind-body therapies – Stress reduction techniques such as yoga and meditation
  • Probiotics and gut health supplements – Restoring microbiome balance
  • Bile acid binders – Medications, like cholestyramine, that help regulate bile acid levels
  • Targeted complementary therapies – Including low dose naltrexone (LDN)

Meet Dr. Emily

I have been in healthcare for over 40 years and have very high expectations of healthcare professionals/doctors. Dr Ward has what I consider the perfect blend of characteristics. She is thorough, listens well, is detailed, concerned, and kind. She has treated our family for many years, and we have great trust in her. I highly recommend Dr Ward!

— Susan C, 60

Dr. Ward is one of the most compassionate physicians I’ve met. She was the first to truly listen to my concerns and symptoms without dismissing them. Through thorough testing, she provided an accurate diagnosis and effective treatment plan.

— Carol, 68

It is wonderful to be listened to and heard as a patient. Women can often be misunderstood in medical settings. But with Dr. Ward I was put completely at ease. There is so much information available and it is difficult as a patient to know what applies to me. Speaking to Dr. Ward was wonderful as she is very clear, and knowledgeable about diet, lifestyle. Especially what applies to me as a woman. I feel more confident having seen her.

— DeAnn, 35

I can’t say enough great things about Dr. Ward and the exceptional care she has provided to me over the last several years. From the moment I met her, I felt welcomed, heard and cared for. She took all the time I needed to explain my health issue and answered all of my questions in a very caring and professional manner. She was also the first doctor to explain a longstanding problem I had and quickly came up with a solution. Her compassionate approach to healthcare is something that is hard to find these days and I’m so grateful to be under her care.
